Kings Island is reviving one of its most beloved attractions — but with an exciting modern upgrade.
During a special media preview, Kerney-Cation was invited behind the construction walls to see Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare, a brand-new interactive dark ride opening in 2026.
For longtime fans, Phantom Theater holds a special place in park history. The original ride operated for a decade before being replaced by Boo Blasters. Now, Kings Island is combining nostalgic characters with new technology to create a ride experience the whole family can enjoy together.

A New Story for a Classic Attraction
Instead of simply riding through spooky scenes, guests now become part of the action.
The story begins on opening night at Phantom Theater when lightning strikes the massive pipe organ. This supernatural blast releases glowing “ghost notes” that scatter throughout the theater.
Riders take on the role of temporary ushers, helping the iconic No-Legs Larry capture the runaway spirits so the show can begin.

Interactive Flashlights Replace Blasters
In a major gameplay upgrade, Phantom Theater replaces laser blasters with enchanted flashlights.
Each rider uses a flashlight that shines a unique color, allowing families to:
• Compete for points
• Track individual scores
• Feel haptic feedback when ghost notes are captured
However, Kings Island emphasized that gameplay is optional. Families who prefer a relaxed experience can simply enjoy the ride’s story, music, and nostalgic characters.

Familiar Ride System, Upgraded Experience
Guests will board ride vehicles called Enchanted Opera Boxes, similar in style to Boo Blasters cars.
Each vehicle includes multiple flashlights, allowing families to ride together while still enjoying interactive gameplay.

Returning Characters Fans Love
Kings Island confirmed several iconic characters will return, including:
• The Maestro
• No-Legs Larry
• Hilda Bovino
• The Great Garbanzo
Plus, new characters will debut when the ride opens.

Opening Date & Passholder Preview
Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare opens to the public on April 18, with Season Passholder previews expected the day before.
Final Thoughts
Kings Island is doing something rare: honoring park history while modernizing the experience for a new generation.
Phantom Theater looks poised to become a must-ride family attraction — blending nostalgia, interactivity, and immersive storytelling in a way few parks attempt.
We can’t wait to return for opening day.

Nice thorough description of this new ride Nathan! Appreciate you interviewing the local ride experts. Will definitely try it when I’m in the Cinci area!
